Sidemen's "Inside": A New Era for YouTube Content?

The Sidemen just wrapped up their ground-breaking reality show as of writing, "Inside," and let me tell you, it was a rollercoaster! That final episode had me on the edge of my seat (literally!). But beyond the entertainment value, "Inside" marks a significant moment for YouTube content.

Mind-Blowing Views, Innovative Format

With over 30 million views across platforms, "Inside" proves the Sidemen's star power. While their Sidemen Sunday videos regularly hit millions, the show's true innovation lies in its format. Here's the magic formula:

  • Network-level production: "Inside" boasts a production quality that rivals traditional TV shows.
  • YouTube accessibility: Unlike network television, it's available globally, free for everyone.
  • Shorter commitment: Compared to shows like Love Island, "Inside" offers a condensed experience – a whole season in a single day!

Reality TV Reimagined

"Inside" fills a unique niche in the reality TV landscape. It's a non-romance game show where contestants are constantly under surveillance, similar to Big Brother (I've never watched big brother but I did see something about Jack Dee) . However, its focus on challenges and strategy sets it apart as this the Sidemens speciality.

Monetization and Side+

While "Inside" lacked traditional ads, Sidemen cleverly integrated their existing brands (Sidemen Clothing, Best CerealXIX Vodka etc.) for subtle promotion. However, Side+ seems like a missed opportunity. The free trial covered the entire show, when a staggered approach (free trial for the first half, then paid access for the rest) could've generated more revenue but the downside of this is that it would probably hurt the brand more then it would make.

Content wise though for side plus felt like the ITV2 channel for the show with BTS and contestant interviews which is nice.

Lessons for Network Television

The success of "Inside" boils down to one key element: high stakes. Learning from YouTubers like MrBeast with his million-dollar challenges, network shows need to understand that viewers crave a reason to truly care about the outcome. That being said Jimmy has got his new amazon show which should be good and might have similar vibe to Inside.(I wish I could go on it but they only accept US residents.)

Overall

"Sidemen: Inside" is a game-changer. It proves the potential for high-quality, accessible reality TV on YouTube. With a few tweaks to monetization and an exciting Season 2, the Sidemen could well solidify their place as pioneers in the future of entertainment. Potentially their own virtual TV channel as well.
